Autism

Definition of Autism:
autism ((psychiatry) an abnormal absorption with the self; marked by communication disorders and short attention span and inability to treat others as people)
*Site:http://wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn?s=autism

Does Autism Affect Communication?
The communication abilities of a person with autism varies according to cognitive level and age. Expressive and receptive language, as well as pragmatics are affected. Around 50 percent of children with autism acquire the ability to communicate, and 25 percent of those who do, develop basic/abnormal verbal and nonverbal communication (Ferrand et al., 1997). Also, about "half of all autistic children are functionally mute" (Rutter, 1968). The degree of impairment of communication also varies.

How does autism affect communication?

The word “autism” has its origin in the Greek word “autos,” which means “self.” Children with autism often are self-absorbed and seem to exist in a private world where they are unable to successfully communicate and interact with others. Children with autism may have difficulty developing language skills and understanding what others say to them. They also may have difficulty communicating nonverbally, such as through hand gestures, eye contact, and facial expressions.
Not every child with an autism spectrum disorder will have a language problem. A child’s ability to communicate will vary, depending upon his or her intellectual and social development. Some children with autism may be unable to speak. Others may have rich vocabularies and be able to talk about specific subjects in great detail. Most children with autism have little or no problem pronouncing words. The majority, however, have difficulty using language effectively, especially when they talk to other people. Many have problems with the meaning and rhythm of words and sentences. They also may be unable to understand body language and the nuances of vocal tones.
Below are some patterns of language use and behaviors that are often found in children with autism.
Repetitive or rigid language. Often, children with autism who can speak will say things that have no meaning or that seem out of context in conversations with others. For example, a child may count from one to five repeatedly. Or a child may continuously repeat words he or she has heard, a condition called echolalia. Immediate echolalia occurs when the child repeats words someone has just said. For example, the child may respond to a question by asking the same question. In delayed echolalia, the child will repeat words heard at an earlier time. The child may say “Do you want something to drink?” whenever he or she asks for a drink. Some children with autism speak in a high-pitched or singsong voice or use robot-like speech. Other children with autism may use stock phrases to start a conversation. For example, a child may say “My name is Tom,” even when he talks with friends or family. Still others may repeat what they hear on television programs or commercials.
Narrow interests and exceptional abilities. Some children may be able to deliver an in-depth monologue about a topic that holds their interest, even though they may not be able to carry on a two-way conversation about the same topic. Others have musical talents or an advanced ability to count and do math calculations. Approximately 10 percent of children with autism show “savant” skills, or extremely high abilities in specific areas, such as calendar calculation, music, or math.
Uneven language development. Many children with autism develop some speech and language skills, but not to a normal level of ability, and their progress is usually uneven. For example, they may develop a strong vocabulary in a particular area of interest very quickly. Many children have good memories for information just heard or seen. Some children may be able to read words before 5 years of age, but they may not comprehend what they have read. They often do not respond to the speech of others and may not respond to their own names. As a result, children with autism sometimes are mistakenly thought to have a hearing problem.
Poor nonverbal conversation skills. Children with autism often are unable to use gestures—such as pointing to an object—to give meaning to their speech. They often avoid eye contact, which can make them seem rude, uninterested, or inattentive. Without meaningful gestures or the language to communicate, many children with autism become frustrated in their attempts to make their feelings and needs known. They may act out their frustrations through vocal outbursts or other inappropriate behaviors.

HomeWork!!

What a lovely morning, this is the type of morning that make you wish you were in Hawaii, well this is not what I want to talk about, the real point is that I am again writing a t about, I told you before we have a teacher wish really deals with us in this way, last time we were talking in the class so she got upset and left us with a homework about manners in the classroom, and this time she asked us for a homework in the weekend and I guess no one did it so we have to write a punishment assay about what should we do in case we did not know what is our homework and if we didn’t have the homework paper, well I know one thing when I used to be in school it was a very wrong thing not to do the homework and the punishment we used to get was according to the teacher, but I guess that the answer for my teacher's answer is that we should contact her which means sending her an email asking about the homework so if I was confused about anything it would be clear for me, now that I've answered her question I really would like her to understand our situation as I will say it in the next few lines, we are students? Sure we are. Do we have obligations to do? Absolutely every student in the world has. I can guarantee you we know our duty as we are solders before we are college students and one of our most important task is to do our work properly, but we also know that each person has an obligation which has to be fulfill in a way or another and I really believe our teacher is not, she really forgets that we are in our campus for the hole week without seeing our families or talking to them and we have only two days to do that and in our campus there is no internet these days which prevents us from doing our home works, plus that we wake up since 4 am to do our everyday training, I really want her to consider this way with us, I want her to understand that we are trying our best with all our circumstances, and that we are still young every person in our age would be naughty sometimes. I really hope my point was clear and that it will fix a lot of things.

The Punishment

Today I am going to tell you a small story which I am writing this text because, let me first introduce myself to you, my name is Hamad, and I am a military student in Zayed’s university, I am still taking the course of English levels, which are by the way eight levels we have to complete before starting our major.
Well, let’s start with my story. Since I am a very naughty boy and I have some class mates who are the same, we were a big mess today morning and a huge disturbance to our teacher. we never stopped talking even when she asked us to be quite, so after she got fed up with us she just plugged in the blogger, wrote in the punishment she saw we deserve as I see this and she left the classroom upset with us, but in a matter of fact I think it is a good punishment after all, because she wants us to talk about obedience in the class which is was we really miss.
Now you have a clue about what I will discuss in this text, so let's get started.
Classroom is a place where we gain almost half our life knowledge from, our ancients told us that since is like the light of our lives, and the teacher is almost like a prophet, because they are carrying such a great message with them to be delivered to us, so the least we have to do Is to show as much respect as we can, and that will be as following:
  • Hamad you should not eat in the classroom.
  • Hamad it is wrong to have a discussion with your class mate in a topic out of the lesson frame, and it is better that I will have it with the teacher.
  • It is also so wrong to get busy with my phone or my laptop during the class time.
  • One of the most common and biggest mistakes is to interrupt the teacher while she is talking, if I have anything to say I must raise my hand, wait for her to finish talking, and allowing me to speak of myself.
  • Never be late to the classroom unless I have a good reason for it.
  • If I have an exam it is extremely forbidden to cheat during the exam.
  • I should never get busy drawing anything or writing on my books while the lesson is taking place, which means I have to fully concentrate with my teacher.
  • Finally Hamad whenever you talk to your teacher you have to be so gentle and polite while doing that, any teacher would at least deserve to be spoken to politely.

Now I have almost reached the end of my punishment assignment which I appreciate doing, in my opinion it is the least apology we can give to what we have done, and I really hope what I wrote was something that will benefit me and who are in my shoes.
